Lagos Nigeria 2026 – Briefing 5

LAGOS, NIGERIA – April 21, 2026
Day 5: The Last Full Day

Matthew and Abubakar

Tina saying goodbye to Ariella

The last full day of a mission has its own particular feeling. You know what has been accomplished, the learning shared, the collaboration built, and there is a happiness in the air that is hard to put into words.

Ariella was discharged today, another life walking out of these doors changed. In the corridor, the kids who are still recovering are playing together. For many of them, this might be the first time they are surrounded by others who look like them. There is something quietly powerful about that: not feeling alone in something you have carried your whole life.

Meanwhile, in the operating room, the team performed two cleft lip repairs, a fitting way to close the surgical week. After days of palate work, lips are where missions like this tend to end: the recovery is shorter, and patients can go home sooner. It is by design, and it works.

Two more walk-ins came through today. The word is still spreading, even on the last day. Every new face that walks through that door is a reminder of how much need is out there, and how much a simple flyer, a radio interview, or a conversation can do.

Tomorrow we wrap up with the teams, say our goodbyes, and leave in the evening. More on that then.
