Roosevelt created the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which supported a number of budding artists, including a young, particularly talented one named Charles Schucker.

Charles completed twenty watercolors/gouaches encompassing city life in Chicago, Illinois, and the nearby countryside. Most of these works are now in national museums such as the Illinois State Museum. Charles moved his family to New York after WWII and became a renowned artist and Professor of Art at the Pratt Institute. He is best known for his abstract paintings along with his contemporaries such as Morris Louis, Helen Frankenthaler, and Jackson Pollack. His major exhibitions include the Metropolitan Museum, the Brooklyn and Katonah Museums of Art in New York, and a One-Man Show in 1971 at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and his papers and writings are featured at the Smithsonian. This particular watercolor/gouache painting comes from the family collection of Cheryl Chang and Carrie Schucker, Ph.D, member of the Rotary Club of San Francisco. As there are only a few WPA paintings left in the collection, the family is planning to host a retrospective show, so this painting may be the last of its genre to be donated. This painting is being donated to Alliance for Smiles because of the life-changing work the organization provides to children and their families. An illustrative biography from the 2017 Walter Wickiser Gallery Show will be included with this auction package. The painting was recently custom-framed. Painting dimensions are 22″W x 15″H and frame dimensions are 32″W x 25″H. This is a truly priceless work of art and piece of history.
