Dr. Chih Fang Retires from Kaiser Sacramento

AfS volunteer anesthesiologist and board member Chih Fang is retiring from his position as Director of Anesthesia at Kaiser.

Chih first volunteered with Alliance for Smiles (AfS) in 2010, and since that time he has become an integral member of the AfS family! He has served as an anesthesiologist on eight medical missions to countries as diverse as China, Myanmar, Nigeria and Cameroon. Beginning in 2012 he volunteered even more of his time and considerable talents to this work by joining the AfS Medical Services Committee as Lead Anesthesiologist. In 2013 he stepped up yet again, and became a member of the Board of Directors, of which he remains an active and important part of to this day. Throughout his time at AfS Chih has received two prestigious awards: Volunteer of the Year in 2014, and The John Uth Memorial Award for Significant Financial Support in 2019.

While he has been so diligently giving his time and support to AfS, he has also served as Director of Anesthesia at Kaiser Sacramento. Everyone who works in his department describes him as a great leader and a real “character”! Now that his time at Kaiser has come to an end, we wish him great success in this next chapter of his life.

Here is a little about Chih’s life and path, in his own words:

I was born in Taiwan and emigrated to Canada when I was 17 years old. I went to medical school at the University of Toronto. I completed my residency in anesthesiology at Stanford University.

I was attracted to AfS because of the cause they foster and the good work they do. I also particularly enjoy the congeniality and camaraderie among the mission team members. It gives me great gratification to see that a two hour operation can change a child’s life forever.

In my spare time, I do a lot of ballroom dancing with my wife and travel with our friends across the world.

Chih is a man of many interests, talents, and a world of experience, and AfS is incredibly fortunate to have such a wise and generous supporter and leader. Congratulations on your retirement and thank you for everything, Chih!

In honor of Chih’s retirement, please consider making a gift to Alliance for Smiles. Your donation will provide free surgeries to children with cleft lip and palate conditions who otherwise would be unable to access or afford them, along with training and support to the medical teams who serve them locally worldwide. Be like Chih and “change a child’s life forever” today!
